Install manual says 10 gauge wire but also have seen mentioned 12 gauge which needed also does unit have an external grounding lug since our code requires grounding to grounding rod separate from regular electrical ground from the breaker

It's best to connect the wire as indicated in the instruction manual (wire number 10). This device has an external grounding terminal.
