What does the mode button do? Not in the instruction manual.

Ice crystals filled with water can be frozen in a refrigerator. After freezing, they can be placed in the upper water tank.

How long should the filter last before replacing it? We have been using ours for a month and there is a bad odor coming from the water and it appears it needs a new filter? What can we do to remove the odor? Thank you.
