The worms will move between trays. You encourage them to move into a particular tray by putting the food they like there. When they mostly leave the old tray, you can harvest the castings.

If they are happy with the temperature, humidity and substrate, they will generally stay inside. They don’t like light. If they are not happy inside, they will try to escape.

The worms don’t have enough space to crawl out. The vent holes are good for ventilation but allow fruit flies and ants. It would have been nice if the cent holes had a mesh.

The trays sit inside each other, my worms have never escaped. I have mostly blue worms with some red wigglers mixed in. I love using this system. Just keep it balanced and your worms should find it the place they want to be. Follow vermicomposting learn by doing on YouTube and you'll see how he uses this system, it's what I do and have great success. I'm getting another soon so I can process more scraps.

They dont get stuck between, but they will freely move through the levels and into the bottom so it is important to put just shredded paper in a tray or two at the bottom and feed the top.

Worms travel up, down and through; I have never had any get out of the bins themselves. I would encourage using the coconut matting sparingly. It doesn't allow for good draining.
