The material of a fender decides how long it lasts and where it sits against your hull. Both matter more than size alone, and if you choose the wrong one, you will have security that looks good at the dock but doesn't work when the weather comes in.


Round Ball Fenders and Their Uses


Round boat fenders have a lot of space inside, which makes them spherical and strong. Because of their shape, they spread force over a large contact area, which is great when you are up against a rough piling or a neighbor who rocks back and forth in a busy marina.


Volume offers a real, measurable advantage. A ball fender with the same nominal diameter as a cylindrical one holds a lot more air. This means it compresses less when loaded, and it keeps your hull farther from what it is defending. When the swell starts to work, that extra standoff distance is what it is all about.


They work best at the bow and stern, where the hull curves sharpest. A cylinder-shaped fender rolls around strangely on a curved surface and tends to squirt out from between the hull and dock at the worst possible time. A ball, on the other hand, stays in place and remains in contact with the dock throughout the tide cycle.


For rafting up, where two hulls press together in swell, and for mooring in exposed berths with a lot of surge, bigger balls are also the norm. The downside is that they take up a lot of closet space, but most can be deflated and stored away off-season. For sailboat fenders on a beamy hull, ball designs work best for heel angles.


Cylindrical and Horizontal Designs


Most leisure boats worldwide have cylindrical fenders, which hang vertically along the topsides. They are much cheaper than ball designs, store flat against a wall, and cover a wider range of heights than a ball of the same diameter.


Horizontal boat fenders do not hang from a cleat; instead, they run along the edge of a dock or a rub rail. This protects a continuous run instead of a single place, which is good for slips where you dock over and over in the same spot and know exactly where the hull touches the water.


With horizontal mounting for finger piers and movable docks, you don't have to worry about putting out fenders every time you arrive. The protection is always there, which matters when you are short-staffed, the light is fading, or the wind is pushing you sideways.


Both types of ribs are important. Ridged surfaces stick better to pilings and don't roll, while smooth surfaces slide more easily against a clean dock face. All of an EVA boat dock fender's cells are closed, so a hole in it does not ruin it. Since there is no valve to leak, there are no yearly pressure checks, and the roof won't suddenly fall apart at 2 a.m. when a barnacle or exposed bolt head finds a seam.


Also, foam fenders last longer because they don't break down as quickly in UV light, and they stay flexible in cold weather, when vinyl gets stiff and loses much of its cushioning. The downside is that they are bigger and cost a little more because you cannot deflate them to store them more compactly.


Take an honest look at your conditions. Forever, rough business docks with exposed hardware beat up inflatables. Marinas with shelter and clean pilings almost never do. Many cruisers use vinyl for everyday use and bring foam boat protectors for places far from a chandlery, where a hole would leave them vulnerable.


Sizing and Hanging Correctly


Size goes with boat length. As a general rule, there should be at least three fenders on each side and one inch of fender diameter for every four to five feet of hull. Also consider displacement. A heavy full-keel cruiser needs more fenders than a light planing hull of the same length.


Most people get the hanging height wrong, which is also the main reason why fenders fail. The fender should touch the hull's widest part, at or just above the waterline in a fixed-dock berth. Adjust it carefully for the area's tidal range so it works at both high and low water.


Never use a rail or stanchion that could bend under load for a fender line. Instead, use a strong line with a clove hitch and a half hitch on a lifeline or cleat. When you buy marine fenders, check the eyelets. Molded-in eyelets last a lot longer than bolted-on hardware, especially when hit by the shock of passing traffic.

Heavy Duty Construction and Wall Thickness


Heavy-duty boat fenders have stronger eyelets that are molded into the body instead of being attached later. They also have thicker walls and a higher material density. The difference is more noticeable under heavy load than when the boat is not. In a shop, two fenders may look the same. The key measure is wall thickness. After a rough season, thin-walled economy fenders permanently change shape, getting flat spots that make it impossible for them to stand off the hull properly. This leaves your topsides exposed where you thought they were protected.


The heavier grade is clearly better for commercial and workboat use, moorings out in the open, and places where the tide comes in and out. Sheltered lake slips with floating docks and no-wake traffic rarely need it, and the money you would spend on business construction would be better spent on the boat itself. Check the eyelet strengthening too. When a wake comes through, that one attachment point takes the full shock load. If an eyelet tears at 3 a.m., the fender will float away, and the hull will grind against a piling until you wake up.


Docking, Rafting, and Transit Uses


Docking is the clearest use. Boat bumpers for docking are put in place before you enter a slip so that the hull hits the bumpers first, not where the boat will settle afterward. When rafting up, you need much bigger fenders than when you are just docking, because two moving hulls make a lot more force than a fixed dock ever will.
