Advice: Open the gun up and add a couple dabs of hot glue to prevent arcing circuit damage. See photos.This is for the S-993A desoldering gun. I Used this to desolder about 1,300 bad components during a large project. It generally works OK, but I've ran into trouble cleaning it. Another reviewer mentioned putting some dielectric (silicon) grease in the capture tube. It does make dumping out the old solder really easy. After some time (and a lot of use) there was a loud POP sound and it stopped working.I took the device apart and found an AC-to-DC bridge rectifier had blown. It looked like it might have been arcing for some time until it finally blew out. Rectifier Label is DB107. I've included detailed pictures.

This thing is amazing. I am an electrical tinkerer and spend a good deal of time each week working on different soldering-related projects. I always dread cleaning up mistakes because my skills with wick are less than amazing -- I lift pads more often than I'd like. I found spring-actuated pumps to be frustrating too. This Desoldering Gun makes short, easy work of most desoldering tasks. It's quick and fun to use. You will spend a little bit of time cleaning it but its well worth it. I only wish I had made this investment sooner.

This Vacuum Solder Sucker, works fine for my low volume requirements. It heats up relatively fast, the heat is adjustable, the stand is easy to use and the vacuum is sufficient. On the down side, the instructions are minimal, and spare parts, like the filters tips and retainer tube are not readily available.

Bought this in place of more expensive models costing 3 times as much. I had to drill out the tip so more solder could pass without it clogging and it has worked flawlessly ever since. I’ve used it 20+ hours without issue.

Life saving tool. It pays for itself after desoldering the first 6 throw holes.
