What size of tube can a hand bender work with?


Most hand benders have an outside width of 1/4 to 5/8 inch, but some can go up to 7/8 inch. For bigger sizes and thicker steel walls, you need a hydraulic unit with interchangeable shoe dies.


Is it possible to bend cold hard-drawn copper?


It is not safe. When cold-bent, hard-drawn copper breaks. Use a torch to heat the piece until it glows a dull red color. Let it cool, then use a former the right size for the tube's diameter to bend it.


Why does bending my tube make it flatten out?


Either the bend radius is too small for the wall thickness or the die hole is too big for the tube. Keep the radius at three times the outside diameter and use a matched mold.


How much do you think the springback will be?


Springback is about 2 to 5 degrees for mild steel and closer to 8 degrees for stainless steel. Overbend slightly past your goal, then check with an angle finder before releasing the clamp.


Do you need to fix the hydraulic ram?
