When we i got ours it was very clean just a little packing material in it. We did clean with dish soap. We also boiled water in it and discarded when we were ready to start boiling sap. Look into an extension for the shutoff so it can be emptied while on the burner

I simply washed it with dish soap prior. The heat sanitizes it quite well as you boil.

Definitely, hot soapy water first, rinse well then hot water and a tablespoon of bleach. Rinse well and your ready to go.
