Can I skip the clothing hanging rod and what is the total width without it, just the changing table and side basket?

You can leave off the hanging rod during assembly. The width of the table with only the main frame and side basket is 30.00 inches, as the hanging rod is an extra outward attachment that does not add to the base width.
