The pole is the basic part for product installation. However, if you can achieve your desired effect by combining other accessories, that is also possible. Thanks for your feedback.

After purchasing this item, I'm going to answer my own question. YES, you could certainly use just the two outer arms and bring the monitors together to meet in the middle. I'm not sure why they said you couldn't. However, I bought an attachment to clamp onto my Surface Pro and use it as a third monitor on the side. The uneven weight doesn't seem to be a problem and I can bring it closer, since it's a smaller screen than my 22 inch monitors.
