In my opinion I think you should let the fire pit cool down please be careful!!! Because the fire pits are very HOT after being used. Maybe 15-30 minutes you make the decision what works for you. Again Please Be Careful!!!!! And Be Safe…

Absolutely never cover a fire that's still dying down. Put it out thoroughly first. Or get a *mesh* cover and put that on top of your firepit if you want to leave it unattended while still hot.

It will get Smokey but ignite? Don’t think so. As long as it’s dying down you shouldn’t have an issue.

It will not ignite, however the lid will buckle with the intense heat. The manufacturer specifically states not to put the lid back on until the fire and coals are done.

I have used the cover when there are just embers remaining in the fire with no problems.
