What medium is used for tumbling depends on what you are doing. It comes with round shot....I have replaced that with a better 3-shape shot because I use it for jewelry polishing. If you are tumbling stones, you could utilize the shot it comes with.
Basically, the barrel is plastic...you can use whatever you want depending upon your project.
