Yes. They install against the side or face of a post that is above ground. The spike part that goes into the ground sits out about 1-2" from the face it is mounted to. My application had fence posts buried about 2 feet, that had started to lean. We pushed post to make it past level so when the device was hammered into the ground, the post came back to be level.

My fence posts are 3x3. The spikes support them very sturdily. I believe they can support 4x4 post, as long as the posts aren't too high, 6-7 ft should still work.
