For this VEVOR pipe stair handrail, use a 6 mm (0.23") drill bit for pilot holes in plaster/lathe walls. Since it comes with M6 expansion screws, a 6 mm bit is the correct size. For plaster/lathe, we also recommend: Use a stud finder to locate wooden studs for secure mounting. If no stud is available, use wall anchors suitable for plaster/lathe (M6 size).

I’ve had this rail outside for a few years and no problem with rust.
