i have an opeing of 8" and the other 8.5" would this fit both?

Its fits my 8" exhaust so it should not fit over anything bigger than that. I would not take a chance on purchasing if you are intending to use on both. Unless you can narrow the width of the fan mount on the 8.5", you may be disappointed

my 8 inch ventilation fan has an 8 7/8 opening. Will the end with the draw string open wide enough to go around it?

You need to measure the specific size of your fan. If it exceeds 203mm, you cannot use it.
