Mine is hung at 14 feet and the loop chain (the chain that I pull on to raise/lower the hook) just touches the floor.

I would have to say 12' is probably the max you would want to hang it.

Not sure about the question, but here's what I know. I bought the 20 ft. model. On top of the hoist is just a large hook. All the way extended ( out ) the lift chain when the hoist is hung up by the large top hook is 20 ft.long from hook to hook. The drive chain goes almost to the ground when the lift chain is all the way out and hook is on the ground when hoist is hung up. There was nothing white about it, the black powder that's on the chains will come off on your hands big time. Wear gloves for that.

Mine is only 7.5 feet above the floor and I might get another 3 or 4 feet
Why not hang a strong chain from that 20 foot point to make up the difference?
