How often do the filters need to be changed?

Can I remove screws a flip the entire fikters housing so my inlet is on the right side instead of the left side?

Another answer says that flowing from right to left changes how water hits the filter but does not say if it matters. If my flow is from right to left and I plumb it that way, do the filters still work effectively? Is there any downside to this?
