In the first question the answer given is Vacuum Pump Lubricant No. 68 OR ordinary engine oil. What weight of engine oil should be used if I go that route?

It is best to use a dedicated pump lubricant, which can be viscosity 68 or 100. For a 5cfm pump, please add about 400ml.

I received this vacuum pump for Christmas. I just got it set up, put the oil in and switched it on and it smokes like a freight train. Is it supposed to do that?

This is normal, use will produce a small amount of fumes. Do not leave it open to smoke the atmosphere.
