Does it have to be in concrete?

If you use soil, there will be air inside the soil, which may not be so tight, and the product may be squeezed later. So we recommend using concrete because it has better air tightness.

Can you remove the grate after installed in concrete? You have to pry the grate out and it bends the outer gutter wall out. If in concrete can you?

The gutter is rigid and will not be squeezed or compressed by the concrete. When you install the gutter, do so with the grate installed to ensure the gutter maintains is size so that you can remove the grate for cleaning. I installed the gutter with the stainless steel grate into a patio. I'd recommend applying painters tape over the grate in case you get cement on it.
