These jacks work like the old car jacks that cars used to have before other styles came about.
You have to take CAUTION and go slow when coming down in reverse motion for there is a lot of pressure from what you are lifting.

I suspect you are not old enough to have used a bumper jack which is essentially what this is.
It works by the lever ratcheting the shoe (the part that lifts the object) up and down a notched vertical beam.
How slowly it goes up and down is linked to you operating the lever.
To lower, you switch the lever to "down" and then press DOWN on the lever until the lift disengages from the notch on the beam. Then you slowly let the lever up and the load lowers to the next notch.
