It is a 1 inch square rod. But you need extra room so you can add quik drying cement. I dug out about 20 inches deep (i added a little bit of pea gravel in the bottom) and then set the rail . Very easy installation as I did it myself. I use this every day and it is so sturdy!!

I did this for someone else, but if I remember correctly, the diameter of the square post that went into the ground was between an inch and a half and 2 in. They have the same bottle with a flange on the bottom that you could connect the concrete or wood or whatever you want to connect it to and it is super high-quality just like the one that goes into the ground. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
