What size hammer drill bit needed for the expansion bolts? bolts

I used a 5/16” bit to get the depth and then a 3/8” hammer drill bit to round it out enough for the bolt and wedge to be pounded down. It worked perfectly.

As long as you put screws in, yes. Make sure you get good beefy screws. I made a 50’ x 10’ garden with 4x4s and these were a life saver!!!

Can you Pitch you pergolas roof when you use these?

No. You'd need trusses for that. I used them for a carport, front legs a few inches shorter than the rear for rain to drain off.
