My guess is that one is for the lower temps and the other is for the higher temps. This unit has wide range and can read very high temps, much higher than most other units. One laser is calibrated for 0 - 500 deg f, and the other probably 500 - 3600. Both lasers are on during use

The thermometer measures a circular area between the two dots. You cant measure just a point. The closer you are, the smaller the area. That is why two dots is better, because then you have an idea what area is being measured. Single dot units function the same, however only show you the center of the area, leaving you to guesstimate the area. That is why infrared units have ratio ratings. The larger the ratio(50:1 is larger than 12:1), the smaller the area, thus the farther away you can be and achieve an accurate measurement of a set area.
