Do you hear a humming sound when the fan is powered on? Please unplug the unit, gently rotate the fan blades with a wooden stick, and check if they turn smoothly or if there is any stuttering or unusual resistance. After installing , is it normal for there to be an odor? To me it smells like that spray for your throat when it’s sore.

can they be mounted with the head upside down?

Yes can be mounted that way, but I will tell you these are very powerful even on the low setting. So keep that in mind when installing it.
