We just turn top upside down to drain excess water. Then dump out excess water and wipeout the gallon heater with cloth and white vinegar after each use. Sometimes three to four days before we make another run of water.

I wipe it out with a Method wipe after each cycle. There is always some hard build up on the bottom that doesn't wipe up. When there gets to be a lot of build up, I add a couple of tablespoons of citric acid to the water and let it run its normal cycle. The build up gels and wipes right up after. Remember to wipe the gasket on the cover and let it completely dry before using the distiller again. Otherwise it will leak badly. I learned this the hard way and ruined my first distiller.

I've seen reviews of other people cleaning theirs after several gallons, I clean mine after 1 to 2 gallons, after a days use4. I always put it away clean.
