I put a piece of rebar in the ground and attached the ground wire to it. It may not be necessary but better safe than sorry.

I have been running these pumps for 9 years and have never grounded mine. If you want you can put a grounding rod in the ground and ground it to that.

you can install a grounding rod and attach wire, i have 2 groundfaults, one in my breaker box and one at the pump, as well, i think codes require groundfaults in most applications

I never hooked that wire up on my pump,I think it is suppose to ground the pump directly to the ground through a grounding rod ( usually a long copper rod driven into the ground.) to prevent electrocution. When pump is hard wired and being run on 210/220 volt option, or to maybe meet local codes. I stayed with a 110/115 supplied by a ground fault circuit, and have had no problems
