All the instructions that I have read for other hives say that the first step before assembly is to paint the hive. This wood is very pretty and I would prefer not to paint, but I also don't want my hive to get wood rot. The picture in the instructions shows the assembled hive unpainted and says use bees wax for maintenance. How often do I need to apply the beeswax
For outdoor beehives, it is recommended to apply paint every 3-6 months. If the beehives are located in a sheltered, rain-protected shed/eaves, the frequency can be extended to 6-12 months. The key is to check whether the beeswax layer on the wood surface shows signs of cracking, whitening, or moisture absorption.

Is this suitable to use in the northeast states that get a lot of snow? Just wondering if it would allow in to much cold and end up killing the bees?
Well, I'm not sure. I'm in Kentucky. Our winters swing wildly. I'm definitely hoping. I will offer this. The bees seem to do a really good job sealing it up. The cover is hard to pull off between inspections. That said, I would wrap the hive. It's only on one side.
