For winter storage: Turn off the power and let the water cool. Shut off the cold-water supply. Open a hot water faucet to relieve pressure. Open the drain valve (or disconnect the drain connection if applicable) and allow the tank to empty completely. Leave the tank drained until you're ready to use it again. Make sure all water is removed if the heater will be exposed to freezing temperatures to prevent damage.
