The cover can heat with the lid off, lid must just be plugged in still.

That is correct so not cover while cleaning! I boil mine after it starts to boil for about 30 minutes. I love my machine
By Eugene Jonah
Yes, it does.

No, the water does "boil" with the top off, Their cleaning powder seems to work better than vinegar, wish I knew what it is and/or how to purchase it, my unit gets dirty quickly..

You have to push the 'reset' button each time you use the machine, but when you do, the machine will heat to boiling whether the cover is on or off.
By Joanne Bacon
Yes that is incorrect. Put citric acid in and run the unit.

Mine heats fine with the cover off. just takes a few minutes. I use a kitchen jar mop to help .

The instructions I had said to,
1) Fill it 1/3 of the way full
2) Put in the citric acid
3) Close it up and run it normally for about 30 minutes
4) Wait 10-15 minutes before opening it and then throw away the water.
That's what I do except instead of 30 minutes I let it drain into a kitchen pot and wait until about half of the water distills out.
Don't let it boil off completely or you'll just replace calcium residue with citric acid residue and need to clean it again immediately.

The water will come to a boil with the lid off.
Add citric acid right before it boils, then unplug the distiller. Wait 8 hrs then rinse the distiller with soap and water. Make sure you taste test the first distille batch afterwards to make sure you got all the citric acid out. Just a little sip will tell you.
