You let it run (with the citric acid water in it, half full) and drip out until it's finished. Then clean it out with a clean cloth and water. You can then use it to distill water right away.

You can either fill it to the water line with water, follow all the instructions and let it run a full cycle or add the recommended amount of cleaning crystals to the water and run a cycle. But then you may want to run another cycle of plain water. As long as the lid is on and it is plugged in, the machine takes care of the heating.

When cleaning this Pure Water Distiller before first use, please add citric acid and water, boil the water to 100 degrees, then pour out the water in the pot and rinse with clean water. Also, please note that the first bucket of distilled water cannot be used.

That is a good question, because the instructions are so vague, that is what I wrote in my review of the item, is that the documentation needs to be much better. I just distilled a full tank the first time being that I am only using the water for my steamer and iron. I guess if you are using the water for drink, I would definitely boil about liter and add the cleaning chemical provided.
