I have this model coffee maker. You to carefully place the pipe stem into the notch at the bottom of of the coffeemaker. Try it with the the coffee grid filter basket. It takes practice.
1. Try without water in the coffeemaker
2. Try with water in the coffeemaker.when making 45-50 cups of coffee, fill the basket nearly full of coffee going.

No it is not stationary to any part of the coffee maker. I insert it in the basket then put it in the coffee maker and it should pretty much land in the spot on the bottom of the coffee maker. Doing that way I have not had trouble.
