They could probably but they couldn’t really build a nest, not enough room. I haven’t had any issues.

Very small bugs, yes. I think the ends are far to small for wasps.

These balusters are hollow, but only open about 1/8" of any inch at each end. Once you attached them with the screw on both ends then they tend to slightly bend, therefore closing the 1/8" opening to almost nothing, so a very small but could get inside, but not a wasp.
