Back when I was a street cop, when it snowed we'd pull our patrol cars into service stations or fire departments and use their floor jacks to put on cable chains. If you've ever tried to do this on the side of the highway, or in your driveway, you know what a challenge this is.When this floor jack became available, I jumped on the opportunity to save myself some trouble, and the timing was perfect. We had our first snowstorm a couple of days after this was delivered, and I installed chains on my car in 10 minutes, with no hassle.The floor jack came fully assembled, with an easy-to-follow instruction booklet. The only additional thing needed for safe operation was a couple of wheel chocks, which I got at a local auto parts store for under $20. I also practiced jacking up both of our cars, but it's a no-brainer procedure. Just position the padded lift pad under the vehicle's jack point, raise the jack lift slowly until you've made solid contact, then lift away until the tire is about an inch off the ground. Put on the tire chains, and lower the wheel back down. Repeat with the other wheel, and you're good to go, without frustration or skinned knuckles!This is the heavy-duty version, which was technically more lifting power than I needed for my Subaru and Honda cars, but several of our neighbors have heavier vehicles, so I was able to help them out as well.When not in use, the jack fits under my garage workbench, out of the way until the next snowstorm.
