Does the base detach? Or can the legs be easily removed in order to transport in a car?

When you receive the product, the base and box are separate and need to be fixed with screws. Generally, after installation, they do not need to be disassembled. If you need to disassemble them, it is also possible, but be sure to keep the screws well and they can be reinstalled.
